This was the year the wheels started to turn. Opportunities included a TEDx talk and speaking at Conservation Lab in Cape Town. Being listed in the San Miguel ‘Rich in Passion’ List and the North Face ‘She Moves Mountains’ Campaign, plus, spending time with the Black Mambas, an all female anti-poaching team in South Africa.
There is no better place than the summit of Everest for a spot of reflection! In 2017 I sat on the summit of Everest for 30 minutes, a rare privilege, with an endurance of 47 days above 5000m on the mountain. I use my adventures as a platform to raise funds for How Many Elephants and other initiatives.
Our debut exhibition launched in Brighton, UK. It caused quite a stir as it visualised the annual poaching rate of 35,000 elephants in a powerful art installation. Part of the originality of the exhibition is in its approach to avoid any gruesome or gory images. To connect with this data visually was highly impactful and left our audience speechless!
Whilst I was studying for a Masters in Sustainable Design, I embarked on a passionate journey which led to How Many Elephants. It was the similar of vegetable ivory to elephant ivory that started me researching the African Elephant crisis. I was horrified by the statistics and wanted to find a powerful way to raise awareness.
The translucent tones and unique textural appeal of vegetable ivory caught my eye. It’s a nut from the South American Rainforests which I was using in my professional practice as a designer and maker. I became fascinated by this small nut and a big story started to emerge.
The first time I threw myself out of an aeroplane, my life changed forever. In that moment, I decided I wanted to work as a camera flyer. Eventually I landed my dream job which, on reflection, I refer to as the ‘boldness of youth’; I knew nothing about skydiving or filming but none of that mattered, I knew I could have a go at learning the skills I needed!
